Our
dress
Our dress is the historical symbol of the group.
The elegant women dress is the exact
reproduction of the costumes wore by the upper class in the town of
Aosta towards the end of XVIII century, whose features are to be seen
in a painting by Stagnon.
The most valuable and distinctive element in the women dress is the
black bonnet, made of fine guipure, sized and tuyauté, called
Fontange; its name, Fontange, clearly refers
to the French coiffure wore by Miss De Fontange at the court of Lousi
XIV.
The dress is made of red woollen cloth with a flounced skirt reaching
the feet. The jacket, of the same cloth, reaching the skirt backwards
at the waist and divided in front, is closed by a black cord whose
ends were originally clipped by two silver clasps.
The kimono sleeves end over the elbow with two three-layered little
white linen sleeves. A big vieux-rose-styled knot, serving as a fastening
on the chest, and a black velvet bow with cameo on the neck are the
two kind of frivolous elements in the costume.
The men dress reproduces the upper-class
costume of 1830s.
Its made of dark blue woollen cloth: the trousers are enriched
by a nine-buttoned cloth reaching the waist and by a pair of shoulder
straps. The linen shirt presents a pleated shirtfront. The tie, with
a large scarf shape, is made of red silk with a particular knot. The
costume is completed by an elegant top hat. Men wear red socks and
black boots.
